The Journey of the Little Black Dress
Jenn needed a nice dress to wear to her grandmother's 90th birthday. She and her mother shopped together and her mom picked out a simple but elegant black dress with a matching jacket. She wore it to the party and her Grandmother told her over and over how proud she was of Jenn.
A year later, the dress no longer fit Jenn and she gave it to her friend Lindsey to wear for a very important work event. The company president was so impressed with Lindsey that she was offered a big promotion. She thanked Jenn profusely and said she would treasure the dress forever.
Forever is a long time. A few years later during a spring cleaning, Lindsey gave the dress, along with other clothing, to The Salvation Army’s thrift shop. The Salvation Army Orange County’s Anti-Trafficking program held a special day for clients to choose a dress to be used for job interviews. Loren, ready to make her way out into the business world, chose the dress to wear for her upcoming job interviews. She landed a job and started working. With her new found confidence, she got a job as an administrative assistant for The Salvation Army. She immediately realized she had the skills and desire to become a bookkeeper.
While working, Loren started taking classes in bookkeeping. She kept the dress and at each success she had in her schooling and work, she put the dress on and twirled around her room with pride. Years later, she graduated with a degree in accounting and what did she wear to the graduation? Of course: the little black dress. After the event, she cleaned and carefully packed the classic ensemble for her daughter to wear some special day.
