Spring Cleaning? Recycle at our Thrift Stores!
The first day of spring is March 20. That’s the signal to start your spring cleaning AKA decluttering! Consider donating your unused clothing, household goods, or other reusable items to The Salvation Army. Benefits of donating to our centers include:
- Sustainability: Items are repurposed rather than going into a landfill
- Helping Others: Proceeds from our thrift stores fund our rehab centers that help people with substance abuse
- Tax Write-Off: If you document your donations, you may be entitled to a tax deduction. Scroll below for tips!
Here is a testimonial from one of our friends who donated:
Years ago, I was invited to go to the French Alps for a ski trip. I had never skied before and had no ski clothes. I went to the Salvation Army Thrift Store and purchased ski pants and jacket for a VERY small price. As it turned out, my ski lesson was a fail and I brought my ski clothes home and re-donated them – of course to the Salvation Army Thrift Store.

How to Take Your Tax Deduction
If you donate less than $500 in items during the year, you only need a contemporaneous receipt for your donations. Generally, if you donate $500 or more (but less than $5,000) in total of property in good condition, you do not need an appraisal.
If you make a large contributions of property, take pictures and list each item, including the condition and fair market value.
For more information, read IRS Publication 526, Charitable Contributions.
Disclaimer: Neither The Salvation Army nor other charities will give you a value on property donated. It will be up to you to provide this information and you can use The Salvation Army’s value calculator at the link below:
