Shears of Hope: Transforming Lives One Haircut at a Time
On September 30, volunteers visited The Salvation Army Orange County's Anaheim Emergency Shelter to provide haircuts for the guests. Many of them expressed that they hadn’t had a haircut in years due to their circumstances of homelessness and lack of funds.
One of the volunteers shared that she had experienced homelessness herself in the past, and now she uses her skills to give back to the community. The smiles on the guests' faces after receiving their haircuts and seeing themselves in the mirror were truly priceless.
Haircuts can be important for the homeless for many reasons:
- Self-Esteem and Confidence: A fresh haircut can significantly boost a person’s self-image and confidence which is vital for social interactions, job interviews, and daily life
- Social Perception: society often judges people based on appearance. A neat haircut can help reduce stigma and make it easier for individuals to engage with others
- Community Connection: Haircuts often provide a chance for social interaction, helping individuals feel more connected to their community and less isolated
We are immensely grateful to these volunteers for offering their services to the guests at the Anaheim Emergency Shelter. These wonderful volunteers will be returning twice a month to provide free haircuts to those staying at the shelter.
