Ring in the holidays with a kettle

Nov 10, 2023

I once had the pleasure to ring a Salvation Army bell in front of Rockefeller Center; it’s a memory that will last a lifetime. Being a bell ringer was an absolute delight. Try it out for yourself and feel the true spirit of Christmas!

This Christmas season the Salvation Army Orange County will man about 50 locations, including many Ralph’s, Stater Brothers, and Hobby Lobby stores.  In fact, they began ringing this week. But help is needed.

It’s not just about raising money

I spoke with Oliver Nunn, who manages the project, about why we ring the bells. He says his goal is not only monetary, but to:

  • Spread the joy of the season with a smile and a hearty “Merry Christmas.”
  • Show the world that The Salvation Army is still alive and “doing the most good” in Orange County.
  • Bring back memories of times in a person’s life when The Salvation Army helped them, a family member, or a friend.
  • Delight in the experience of a child trying to fit a dollar bill into the little slit in the bucket.

How does it work?

  • On your own: Volunteers generally work in two-hour shifts. You can work one two-hour shift or more!
  • With your children: What a great way for children to learn to serve others by fighting hunger and spreading cheer in the community.
  • With your group: Sign up with your coworkers, friends, or organization to man a kettle for one day – or more! For example, the Women’s Auxillary will be ringing bells on tow separate days this year.
  • Community service: This is a great way for high school and college students to get required volunteer hours.

Getting started

All volunteers will have an orientation, either in person or by video to explain exactly how it works. You are given everything you need, including a bell, the kettle, and an apron.

How do I sign up?

History of Red Kettles

In 1891, Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee was distraught because so many poor individuals in San Francisco were going hungry. During the holiday season, he resolved to provide a free Christmas dinner for the destitute and poverty-stricken. He only had one major hurdle to overcome -- funding the project. Read more here.
