What is an officer in The Salvation Army?

Nov 3, 2023

Hear from Major Judy Hedgren, who served as an officer for 35+ years alongside her husband, Major Rudy Hedgren, at The Salvation Army. They continue to wholeheartedly believe in our mission and truly embody the heart of Christ.

“An officer in The Salvation Army fulfills many roles such as being a pastor at The Salvation Army Corps (church), assessing needs, delivering programs, and directing ministries. We are trained, ordained and commissioned to serve and lead and given a title which uses the terms of typical military rank (i.e. Lieutenant, Major, Colonel).

We are honored to wear uniforms as an outward sign of our calling, to care for the lost, feed the hungry, and comfort the hurting. They remind us that we represent something larger than ourselves. We are an Army on the front lines, supporting our community.

Over our years as officers, we served as Corps Officers (Pastors) in Northern & Southern California, and Arizona.  We were also stationed at Divisional & Territorial Headquarters.

Officers not only lead the church, but also reach out to the community to help with the needs of our neighbors.

Being a Salvation Army officer has given me many opportunities to serve the Lord and encourage and touch the lives of many people all over the world. Even in my retirement, I still am able to be an encourager to others.”

Major Judy Hedgren still volunteers her time and skills to The Salvation Army Orange County. Her deep knowledge of The Salvation Army's history, strong faith and heart for Christ, and longstanding commitment to serving the community has made her an invaluable part of our family.
