Man's Best Friend Welcome at Anaheim Emergency Shelter

Apr 4, 2024

For those suffering from homelessness finding housing with a pet can be more difficult. Many are forced to choose between their pets and a rood over their head. Most choose to stay on the streets with their pets.

Thankfully The Salvation Army Orange County understands the needs for owners and pets to stay together. Our Anaheim Emergency Shelter allows pets to stay with their owners and even offers veterinary services to ensure happy and healthy pets. The Salvation Army Orange County allows people to focus on recovering and rebuilding their lives without having to sacrifice the love of their pet.

A dynamic relationship has always existed between people and animals. Pet owners already know the value of having a pet. The pet is part of the family and offers nonjudgmental, unconditional love. Many times, the owner will put the pets needs before their own. Research shows that even just petting an animal has health benefits. Most people don’t realize just HOW good having pets are for us.

Health Benefits

  • Dog owners require less medical care for stress induced illness
  • Just ten minutes in the company of an animal significantly reduces blood pressure rate
  • Pets increase our perception of our ability to cope with trauma and illness
  • Pet owners have less depression and reduced stress compared to non-pet owners

Psychological Benefits

  • Pets add a sense of security and safety
  • Increased social interaction
  • Help with recovery from addiction; pet-owning addicts are 4 times less likely to relapse
  • A pet gives comfort in the form of touch thereby decreasing loneliness and anxiety
