A life transformed
James Ludwig is an example of the type of person that The Salvation Army (TSA) hopes to reach; a person in need of a helping hand whose life is transformed by TSA and later returns to volunteer for the organization that helped him.
In 2014, James found himself in a criminal court, frightened and pondering his fate. He was at rock bottom and reflected upon a life of drug and alcohol abuse. He had lost everything: his integrity, job, car, home, and now, possibly his freedom. The Judge gave James two options: he could serve time in prison or attend an inpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. Without hesitation, James checked into The Salvation Army Orange County’s Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC). At the time, James had no idea that he had been given the opportunity to embark on a lifelong journey that would lead towards a new and productive life.
James credits the ARC for getting him clean and sober. Spiritually, James learned the happiness that comes from living a life that focuses on others, not just himself. Since 2016, James has volunteered a minimum of 5 hours a week working with men struggling with addiction at the ARC and at hospitals and institutions throughout Orange County.
“Today I’m so grateful. The Judge in the criminal court and TSA saved my life,” said James. “I learned from my mistakes and life gave me a second chance. Living a life of gratitude and volunteering for The Salvation Army Orange County has brought me true serenity."
