Funny Christmas Fails

Dec 15, 2024

The spirit of the season is with us. Many of us are busy cooking food, cleaning the house, and getting ready to celebrate with our family and friends. But sometimes a blooper happens. Here are a few I’ve experienced or heard about. What about you?

Diet Pumpkin Pie
It was the first Christmas dinner at the family of our new daughter-in-law. As the resident pie maker, I was asked to bring pumpkin pie. Of course, no off-the-shelf pie mix for me, I made the pumpkin mixture from scratch. I presented and cut the pie and as everyone took the first bite, a look of horror came across our faces. Yuck! I had left out the sugar. It was lower calorie, but inedible.

Chocolate Fountain
I was at a family gathering where the hostess had just acquired a chocolate fountain and everyone was excited to dip strawberries, sugar cookies, and marshmallows into the warm dripping fountain. However, when it was turned on, it became a geyser of chocolate flinging chocolate all over the ceiling and some tall, unsuspecting guests. You see, one part of the fountain was not installed: the dome that the chocolate was supposed on hit when it sprayed and then flow down the receptacle below. Everyone laughed and helped to clean up the mess while the hostess put the chocolate into a fondue pot. Not as glamorous, but still tasty.

Ham Flower
One Christmas Eve, the host decided to serve a spiral cut ham. He bought the ham at the grocery store but didn’t read the directions on the package. Instead, he pulled out the tattered 30+ year old Betty Crocker cookbook with instructions on heating/cooking a ham.

Two hours later, the smell of ham permeated the house and the ham had overcooked and completely dried out, tuning it into a giant potato chip-like flower. Pizzas were ordered and a fun time was had by all.

P.S. Generally spiral cut hams, like Honey Baked Hams don’t need to be cooked and if so, just warm them.

Candy Cane Cookies
My second notable fail was years ago when my grandchildren and I made candy cane cookies. We made pink and white dough and wrapped them like candy canes. I didn’t have peppermint sprinkles or course sugar but I had peppermint candy and a hammer.

We took turns pounding the candy with the hammer on the garage floor (covered with heave plastic). Then, we sprinkled the mixture on the cookies on the baking pan and cooked them.

Well, unfortunately the candy melted over the cookies and onto the pan. They were stuck so hard we had to chip the cookies off the pan and into the trash. As I recall, we went out for ice cream.

Here’s to a blooper-free and blessed Christmas!
