From Boxes to Fresh Choices!
Recently, The Salvation Orange County celebrated the Grand Opening of our new food pantry at the Anaheim Red Shield. The revitalized food panty has changed to provide a choice of heathy food products to those who are facing the threat of food insecurity. By offering access to free, fresh produce and canned goods, we provide valuable meal supplementation while helping those in need maintain their independence and dignity.
In the past, volunteers and staff packed food boxes for those in need. However, the newly remodeled food pantry looks more like a grocery store and people can now choose what they need, rather than open a box that contains a selected number of food products, which may or may not be what they want or are able to eat.
Take a look at the Dedication and Grand Opening.
Why the choice?
Oftentimes people would leave the food pantry, open the box, and leave things they didn’t need or want. Staff realized that this was a terrible amount of waste. Giving each person a choice, has many benefits, including:
- Greatly reducing waste;
- Giving our clients a feeling of normalcy by “shopping” in the Food Pantry Store; and
- Providing live feedback about what people want.
We’re thrilled to be expanding our mission to serve the community and provide nourishing meals for those in need. Together, we’re making a difference, one meal at a time!
Who can come?
These meals are served to anyone in need - this includes homeless people of all ages, as well as individuals and families who may be down on their luck and in need of a helping hand. In addition to addressing the immediate symptoms of food insecurity, our programs are designed to help identify and treat its root cause. This approach focuses on meeting the physical, mental and spiritual needs of each person and helps move many from hungry to fully healed.
