Finding Creative Ways to Reduce Anxiety
According to the World Health Organization, COVID-9 pandemic triggered a 25% increase in the prevalence of anxiety and depression. So, one out of four of us may now suffer from anxiety. What do we do to combat this problem? Of course, prayer and meditation is very helpful.
But, as a sufferer of anxiety, my doctor told me that doing something creative can reduce the bad feelings quickly. I told her I don’t have a creative bone in my body and that my artistic skills have not advanced since Mrs. Smith criticized (rightfully so) my painting in second grade. When my doctor pushed me, I finally said that baking – especially pies – really makes me feel good.
So, I started making pies almost once a week. And it worked! To be clear, I don’t eat the pie but took them to the office, neighbors, and friends. My boyfriend, Marty, gained 10 pounds, and this was before COVID.
Since I retired, I very seldom feel anxious and he has lost the weight!
Now, I enjoy teaching my friends how to bake beautiful pies. Of course, the crust is the most important part. I never buy a crust as my family and friends would mutiny. I have used the Betty Crocker recipe since the 1970s.
During apricot season, I made a beautiful apricot pie (pictured above). I beat away neighbors, and Marty and I ate the entire pie for dinner one night!
Try it! If you aren’t a baker or chef, find what activity makes you feel a sense of accomplishment and pleasure. Unlike medication, it’s risk free (except for some calories)!
