Counting Miracles

Feb 22, 2025

Counting Miracles is the latest from Nicholas Sparks, author of The Notebook and many acclaimed novels. It is a great story with memorable characters, one of which is inspired the story of Job. In fact, the book’s preface states: “He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted.” (Job 9:10)

The story revolves around three characters:

Tanner, a retired Army Ranger, was raised in the military by his grandparents. In search of his next adventure, he meets Kaitlyn Cooper and immediately shares a connection. Kaitlyn is a doctor and struggling single mom of two. Tanner, the dedicated bachelor who never wants to settle down, has feelings for Kaitlyn, but she rejects him because of his rolling stone history.

Nearby, 83 year-old Jasper lives alone in a cabin bordering a national forest. With only his old dog, Arlo, for company, he lives quietly, haunted by tragic accidents that took place decades before. After experiencing a miracle, his grandfather had become a preacher, as did his father. Although Jasper was not a pastor, he loved the Lord and turned to scripture frequently, which the author includes, bringing the reader closer to Jasper.

As these characters get to know each other, none of them is expecting a miracle…but it could be a miracle that brings them together and heals them all. In a recent interview, Sparks said, “Counting Miracles comes from Job.” Reading the book and listening to him, it is clear Sparks beautifully folded his faith into Counting Miracles.

Reviews

“Sparks is superb at what he does. The setting is postcard perfect. The characters are immensely likable…This is a tidy miracle you can count on.”—The Washington Post

“I was engrossed in the story lines of the characters who were initially strangers to each other, as they moved toward the end of the book where their connections were revealed. I found this story moving and real and found it hard to put down. And, yes, I cried!” —Lynn Freer, Salvation Army donor
