Christmas traditions around the world

Dec 7, 2023

Christmas time is steeped in tradition. We have family traditions, such as singing carols, taking turns reading the Christmas story from the Bible, and even ugly Christmas sweaters. But here are some fun and interesting traditions from around the world.

Radish carving, Mexico:

In Oaxaca, Mexico, the days before Christmas are marked with an event known as the Night of the Radishes, a vegetable carving competition. Participants get remarkably creative, with everything from nativity scenes to fantastical monsters that are on display for thousands of visitors who come witness the fun.

Kentucky Fried Christmas, Japan:

Introducing the greatest Christmas marketing triumph since Coca-Cola popularized the fat, jolly, red-suited image of Santa Claus we all know and love. Christmas isn't huge in Japan but a KFC ad campaign during the 1970s established the tradition of families digging into buckets of fried chicken on December 25th. The result has led to chicken-lovers placing orders month in advance.

Pickle in the Tree, Germany:

A pickle ornament is hidden somewhere within the branches of a Christmas tree, and a gift is given to whichever child in the household finds it. One theory is that the tradition came about because an evil innkeeper trapped two boys in a barrel of pickles. St. Nicholas freed the boys who then made it home in time for dinner.

Roller skating to church, Venezuela:

In Caracas, all the roads are closed to traffic so people can roller skate to church on Christmas Eve.

Fried caterpillars, South Africa:

In South Africa, a fried caterpillar is considered a delicacy so at Christmas, the fried bug is covered with many colorful toppings and enjoyed by families.

Holiday traditions are a way to inject magic into whatever situation you may find yourself. When it comes to setting up your own, think back to what you enjoyed as a child or even what you loved doing last year, and go from there. Focus on things that fill you with joy, then make a list and start implementing them. If you enjoy art try painting ornaments, or if you enjoy food try eating a fried caterpillar!

We'd love to pray for you this holiday season.
