Avoiding Confusion in Charitable Giving
Many people include a provision in their will or trust to leave a charitable contribution to the Salvation Army, Orange County. But beware: If the will or trust doesn’t include specific instructions as to exactly what and where the contribution should be sent, it could callus a big problem.
Here is a real life example: In her trust, a woman wanted to leave a large contribution to “The Salvation Army”. She wanted the fund to be used so support The Salvation Army Orange County Adult Rehabilitation Services. This was because her father had gone through the Orange County Program had given up alcohol and found the Lord. She felt especially blessed by the Orange County Program and wanted to support it.
However, when the successor trustee made the contribution, it was sent not sent to Orange County, but to another division of the Salvation Army because the trustee did not have the direct address for Orange County.
When her children discovered the problem, Orange County was able to track the contribution and have it forwarded to the program that Mom had wanted.
So, when designating a contribution either through a will, trust, or an even an IRA, be sure to send the contribution directly to Orange County and designate it to the program you wish.
Here’s the address to send the contribution. If you want to specify a program, include that in the cover letter with the contribution.
