Celebrate National Salvation Army Week
National Salvation Army week falls on May 13-19, 2024. This week is set aside to remind the country of the comprehensive nature of the services we provide to help people in need in the community. The people we serve are your neighbors – your brothers and sisters.
In 1954, the week of November 28 – December 4 (now recognized in May) was declared by the United States Congress and proclaimed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to be the first National Salvation Army Week, as a reminder to Americans to give freely of themselves. In his speech, President Eisenhower said:
“Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication to the cause of human brotherhood. In time of war, the men and women of this organization have brought to those serving their country far from home, friendliness and warm concern. In the quieter days of peace, their work has been a constant reminder to us all that each of us is neighbor and kin to all Americans. Giving freely of themselves, the men and women of The Salvation Army have won the respect of us all.”
Here are just a few programs the staff and volunteers at The Salvation Army Orange County operate to serve our local community:
- Underserved school children learn vocal and instrumental music through the Freer Forte Music School. Sessions in this new, free, and educational program quickly fill up each session.
- The anti-trafficking program rescues and finds new lives for trafficked individuals by providing immediate safety, housing, and medical care.
- The Center of Hope is a comprehensive solution to homelessness which includes a 325 bed emergency shelter, 72 bed permanent supportive housing, alongside a 175 bed drug and alcohol rehabilitation center.
- Our Family Services team provides food boxes, rent assistance, spiritual support, and case management to uplift struggling families and break through cycles of crisis and poverty.
In the 70 years since the first National Salvation Army week, we have continued to do the most good for our local communities. The Salvation Army helps millions of people overcome poverty, addiction, and economic hardships by preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and meets human needs in His name without discrimination.
“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
